transmutation - mf radio
sound installation for the hove rock festival, norway
6 - 8 radio-transmissions broadcasting on the same frequency on the fm-band, over very limited areas.
rather than to create another autonomous installation, the idea is to add layers to existing installations by 6 other artists, and to create private / isolated spaces for the listener in this hyper-communal environment of a noisy rock festival.
like a parasite or a pilot-fish, each radio transmission creates a virtual 'mushroom' of sound, custom-made for that specific location.
the audience is given free mini radio-receivers, or can tune the fm radio on their mobile-phones to the same frequency.
with earplugs in they will experience walking in and out of sound-fields that no one except those tuned to the same frequency can hear, adding even more surrealness to the already surreal social setting of a festival community.
the audience can of course choose to experience the works with or without the radio transmission.
as the title 'transmutation' suggests, the radio-transmissions take their cue from the works of the other artists, but are not intended to 'decode' the works. they are addendums to the existing ideas, asserting the right to play with and change the way the original artistic intent is received.
